About Sea of Thieves

Sea of ​​Thieves is developed by Rare – but what kind of game is it? Two developers answer this question in this video, including gameplay. Executive Producer Joe Neate and Design Director Gregg Mayles chat about the multiplayer project and sum up: In Sea of ​​Thieves, players should feel as if they could play their part in their favorite pirate stories.

The players should not encounter AI-controlled opponents. Gregg Mayles says: “I think other games make the expectation of a lot of AI presence – for example, powerful pirates that we can place in the game and interact with. But that is absolutely not the game we are developing want”.

The Rare team takes great care that encounters with other pirates in Sea of ​​Thieves are actually encounters with other players.

However, the two developers also make it clear that Sea of ​​Thieves is not an MMO. The pirate adventure can only be played online, but is not intended to become a fairground.

Gameplay

The sun is slowly rising over the sea. Our galleon lies calmly in the water, the captain keeps the ship on course. A lonely island called “Shipwreck Bay”, where a valuable treasure is said to be. The crow’s nest reports: Enemy ship ahead! A fight is inevitable. The crew run around like a wild chicken pile, looking for bullets for the cannons. Great multiplayer adventure

The first few hours in Microsoft’s online pirate game fly by – provided you know how to keep busy. Developer Rare (“Donkey Kong Country”, “Banjo-Kazooie”) creates the perfect playground for hobby pirates.

Together with friends, you will cross the seas and take care of all the tasks that arise on a ship: you orient yourself on the nautical chart, set the sails, align them with the wind, fill the cannons with bullets and stuff after a fight the holes in the outer wall before your own sloop runs full of water and sinks to the bottom.

Even with four crew members (yourself plus a maximum of three colleagues) there is always something to do before the next adventure begins and opposing players, sharks or skeletons demand attention.

Shipwreck for soloists

But the last-mentioned point is also one of the two big problems of the game: single players and out-of-touch gamblers will probably not be very lucky in the pirate adventure. You can also go on a pirate voyage with a smaller ship if you wish, but that has several disadvantages: Whether rigging, steering wheel, anchor or cannons – all tasks are in your hands.

You will also meet enemy pirates on the way, most of whom are in large galleons with the appropriate firepower. Before you sink such a ship, you are already lying on the ocean floor. And by the way, as a loner, there is simply no communication that makes the game fun. “Sea of ​​Thieves” is best suited for groups who use the huge sandpit for their own stories and let the pirate feeling flow into their game. Without this content, the magic of the title is largely lost.

To be fair, however, Microsoft and Rare never communicated anything else before the game was released. In addition, nobody is doomed to play alone, because there is always the opportunity to join a strange crew.

Looted, fought – what now?

The second big problem with “Sea of ​​Thieves”: the current much too low volume. There is a lack of tasks and opportunities on all fronts. It starts with the unsatisfactory character creation: The makers provide you with prefabricated characters from which you can choose.

Men or women, fat or thin, dark-skinned or white as sand, everything is represented. You don’t like the selection? Then you will receive a new range of privateers at the push of a button. But why is there no simple editor for customizing your own character?

Even in the game itself, everyday life as a pirate returns far too quickly. The first sea battles are great fun, the first treasure hunts are exciting, the first fights against skeletons are full of action. And then?

Repeat these tasks over and over again. Until you have acquired all cosmetic items and look like the greatest beauty queen with a golden saber on the oceans. Because that’s what “Sea of ​​Thieves” is ultimately about. Rare saves a progression system where your actions make a difference.

You will get a reputation with one of the three factions based in the game – Gold Collectors, Order of Souls and Trade Union – but otherwise only play for fancy items that you buy from generic vendors. Experience points? A real story? Unfortunately everything is just seaman’s thread.

Room for improvement

In addition, “Sea of ​​Thieves” is currently wasting a lot of potential. There are only two different types of ships in the game: a galleon for a maximum of four players and a sloop for groups of two. Even in combat, you only fire with simple cannonballs. Chain projectiles to destroy the masts or maybe even fire for a hot experience on enemy ships? Nothing!

The actual tasks are just as yawning boredom, because in principle you only drive to one place, collect an object, bring it to your ship, sail back to the outpost and reap the reward.

The same applies here: For soloists, all of these mechanisms lose their appeal after a few hours. It’s not about the tasks themselves, but about the way to get there – and that alone is pretty monotonous and lengthy.

The range of opponents also causes more frustration than pleasure: In addition to enemy players, you will also find vicious sharks in the water and poisonous snakes and skeletons on land. That’s it. If you die in a fight, come back in about 30 seconds.

If your ship runs aground, you will receive a new copy without further ado. Impact? So far none! After all, if you are too frustrated, just give yourself the edge and stagger across the ship like Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
